Where Faith Grows Wild
Dandelions take me back to childhood. The nostalgia that this little yellow flower holds often brings a smile to my face. Even as an adult I enjoy picking a dandelion and blowing the seeds into the air. For a moment I feel the wonder and curiosity that I had as a child. This is the feeling I want to bottle up and make sure my kids experience! In a world oversaturated with technology, it is harder to create space for childhood wonder.

A dandelion is often the first flower a child notices and picks to give to mom. This was the case for my kids. The dandelion is my favorite flower to receive from my kids. It is a sweet reminder that I need to stop and notice the little things in my daily life as a mom. Motherhood is a transformation, not unlike the lifecycle of the dandelion. I chose this flower as the symbol of this club because it reminds me of that connection to my child and my child-like faith.
One day my son brought me a dandelion and I noticed how beautiful the little yellow flower was. I looked up and saw that there were dozens of yellow dandelions decorating the yard. At that moment I made the connection to God’s presence in my life. I had been outside, but I hadn’t paid attention to the flowers…Just like I do with God. Just as the dandelion is scattered in all our yards, God is all around us, if we were intentional to take notice.
The more I thought about the dandelion, the more parallels to the Gospel I saw. Dandelion means “teeth of the lion.” I love the symbolism of God being portrayed as a great lion; the lion of Judah or C.S. Lewis’ famous novel, “The Chronicles of Narnia.” This imagery shifted my perspective to seeing these scattered little flowers as pieces of God’s faithfulness all over my life.
I found the history of the of the dandelion just as interesting. The flower is not native to the new world. When the Europeans left to search for a new life in the Americas they brought the dandelion with them because of its medicinal properties. It began as a delicacy in this country. The flower crossed the ocean with Christianity. Both flourished and forever changed the landscape of the new world.
